One in every 5 Indians is overweight or obese. Obesity is gradually becoming an epidemic in India and several people are becoming the victim of this disease. There are few ways to take control of this excessive weight gain, such as diet control and regular exercise. But these are time-consuming methods and needs a lot of dedication, which is not a cup of tea for several patients.
Thankfully there are several surgical approaches in which extra fat or weight can be removed from the body. Two of the mostly popular methods are liposuction and bariatric surgery.
Liposuction is a surgical method of removing fat from the body. In this process, the surgeon removes fat specifically from the fat zones of the body such as thighs, abdomen, buttocks, arms, waist, chins and neck. It is to be noted that it is not a treatment for obesity as it does not reduce the overall weight of the body. It aims to simply change the shape of the body, to give it a more aesthetic look.
A hollow, cannula like instrument is penetrated through the fat zone, where it breaks down fat and remove it from the body by suction. For this action, a high pressure vacuum is applied to it. Liposuction produces desired effect in short term period only, which lasts up to say 6 months. After this period of time, the fat starts to accumulates in these regions once more. Moreover, the patients needs to lead a healthy lifestyle in order to keep the surgical process effective for the said duration.
It is ideal only for those patients who has a stable body weight, but wishes to eliminate undesirable body fat in specific parts of the body.
Bariatric surgery on the other hand, is a group of surgical methods in which, the extra weight is removed from the body permanently. It is done by tailoring the digestive system of the patient. The effectiveness of the weight reduction surgery is remarkable as it aims for a long term effect. A surgeon creates a few incision and the the abdominal cavity is inflated with carbon dioxide in order to create working space for the surgery.
Weight reduction surgery can be of several types, in some of these a larger portion of stomach is removed along the larger curvature from the abdominal cavity. This results in lesser secretion of hunger causing hormones which ensures lesser urge to eat. Also, it leads to lesser storage of food and the person feels full sooner than usual. In some others approaches, the small intestine is re-routed and thus, it results in lesser absorption is nutrients back in the body.
It is an ideal solution for patients suffering from obesity. Any individual whose BMI is more than 40 or 30 with one or more morbid condition can opt to go for it.
